History

The first translation of the Qur'an was done by Salman the Persian, who translated Surah al-Fatiha into the Middle Persian in the early seventh century.[7] According to Islamic tradition contained in the hadith, the Negus of the Ethiopian Empire and the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius received letters from Muhammad containing verses from the Qur'an[citation needed]. However, during Muhammad's lifetime, no passage from the Qur'an was ever translated into these languages nor any other.

The second translation known was in Greek, which was adopted by a scholar from Constantinople named Nicetas Byzantius, for his 'Refutation of Qur'an' composed between 855 and 870. Yet we don't know anything about who and for what purpose this translation had been done. It is believed to be a complete translation.

The first attested full complete translations of the Qur'an were prepared between the 10th and 12th centuries in Classical Persian. In 961–976, Mansur I, the Samanid emperor, commanded scholars from Khorasan to translate the Tafsir al-Tabari into Persian from its original text in Arabic. In the late 11th century, one of the disciples of Khwaja Abdullah Ansari wrote a comprehensive tafsir of the Quran in Persian. The work of Najm al-Din 'Umar al-Nasafi on translation of the Quran in Persian dates back to the 12th century. All three books' manuscripts have survived and have been published multiple times.

In 1936, translations in 102 languages were known.
